Before I decide whether to condemn wife-beaters or pedophiles, I like to know whether they’re pro or anti Brexit.

Re: Labour want Boycott knighthood revoked
And I say all of this as somebody who has got family members who have been given honours for various things - usually their services to their industry.

These family members are very good at what they do. But it's not like people don't already know that. They are already widely known for their professional excellence - and I've never understood why that is not enough for some.

I'm a journalist by trade, and we have a unwritten rule about not accepting gongs (not that I would ever be offered one!). The thinking is that once you take a gong, you are seen as part of the "establishment" (I generally don't like that term: it's a bit tin foil hat) that you are professionally obliged to hold to account.

So surprisingly few hacks accept gongs. Those who do are taking a controversial step.

Far East,

I'm not remotely surprised to hear that, unfortunately.

I was never a fan of the system anyway - it's all a bit too MATEY for my liking. But it has, as you say, also been hijacked for commercial gain and vanity.

There are some boutique PR outfits that make a lot of money from it all. I don't blame those PR firms - they are chasing the cash that they know comes with it. I'm not a PR person - quite the opposite - but I was once asked by a friend of mine in that industry to do some consultancy work (I was "in between jobs" at the time) and sat in on a discussion about the honours system.

Thankfully, the firm in question opted not to go down that route. The guy in charge didn't like the idea of "cash for honours" and nor did some of his senior staff. Good call. But others are less picky.

About three years ago (I think) I was approached on LinkedIn by someone offering to hand-hold me through the "honour" process.

It was one of the funniest, most ridiculous things I'd ever read. I've been trying to find the message, but looks like my LinkedIn messages only go back 2 years.

They obviously hadn't done any homework on me - so presume it's basically a case of message 1,000 people and then get to milk one vain idiot for a pile of cash

I don't mind honours for outstanding military achievements, or members of the public who devote their lives to a charity for little personal gain. But yes, most of it is back scratching (and back handers).

Sad really, but there you go.

Re: Labour want Boycott knighthood revoked
And, for the record, they should just scrap the honours system. It's ridiculously MATEY, outdated, pointless and needlessly hierarchical.

I have absolutely nothing against military or senior service personnel being rewarded for their bravery, dedication etc. But huge numbers of gongs are now given to bureaucrats, such as senior civil servants, merely for doing their job for a long time.

There is a cut-off point in the senior civil service, above which you are deemed to effectively automatically qualify for a gong. Just for doing the job you've been paid handsomely to do. It's ridiculous.

I also know of several PR firms who specialise in "cleaning up" people's reputations and managing their reputations in order to put them in line for an application (by someone else) for a gong. The whole process can now be managed from start to finish and is all about enhancing reputations, access and (ideally for the "client") income-earning potential.

The system should be scrapped. It's a joke.

It has a different tone, of course, different country, but in Italy almost every major announcement is somehow viewed through the prism of political ideology, wealth or beliefs - a situation not helped by a highly politicised media.

But the Italians are just good at ignoring most of it.

Bruuno - you'll find it happens in most countries, mate. That's the depressing thing. It's not just Britain.

Best thing to do is to just sieve out what's important and ignore the bollocks.

Agree with charley in that if you accept minor wife beating, she deserves it etc, you are put in one political box and if you deplore it you are put in another political box.

To me Boycott’s honour, so long after his career ended, just further discredits the system. Worse it devalues the honours that deserving cases have been awarded.

Agree cholo, my initial reaction before any women's groups/socialists/anybody else got involved, was blimey how did he get a knighthood knowing his criminal past when he hit a woman?
It then has to get politicised and like a lot of things these days you have an opinion it gets lumped into some political party/movement.

Mine was just an opinion and i don't want to align it to anything or anybody.

Grumpster 10:33 Wed Sep 11
Re: Labour want Boycott knighthood revoked
Not that's it's the right thing to do, but a serious amount of women clearly need a slap now and then and are surprised when they get one.

Only had to see how my sister spoke to and abused her boyfriends in her early years to see shes lucky not to be in a grave!!!

As for boycott, always thought he was a bit of a knob, but certainly wont lose any sleep over him being knighted, as literally who gives a shit?

cholo 10:33 Wed Sep 11
Re: Labour want Boycott knighthood revoked
This thread and whole debate is an example of the culture wars, in the past pretty much everyone here would've agreed that Boycott (woman beating aside) is a pompous arsehole who hasn't done anywhere near enough to deserve a KNIGHTHOOD. Not anymore, people automatically take ideological sides.

Sven Roeder 10:22 Wed Sep 11
Re: Labour want Boycott knighthood revoked
He isn’t really being knighted for cricket services.
He is being knighted because Theresa May wants to sleep with him

He had 8,114 Test runs @ 47.72
Is he any more deserving than
K Pietersen 8,181 @ 47.28
Gooch 8,900 @ 42.58
Gower 8,231 @ 44.25

And as far as I know none of them have knocked about some bird in a South of France hotel room that said bird paid for

Boycott should have given Theresa May a slap for lying to to the country about brexit.
